The NFL Super Bowl: Why Roman Numerals Began

The Super Bowl is the world’s most famous annual showcase of Roman numerals. Legendary AFL founder Lamar Hunt and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle instituted Roman numerals beginning retroactively with Super Bowl V in January 1971.

1. The Calendar Problem

NFL regular seasons begin in September of one year, but the championship game is played in January or February of the next year. Naming it "the 2026 Champion" creates debate over whether it means the 2025–26 or 2026–27 season. Roman numerals permanently solve this.

2. Classical Dignity

Rozelle explained that Roman numerals bestowed an aura of classical stature, monumental permanence, and theatrical grandeur on what was then a brand-new merger between two rival football leagues.

3. The "Super Bowl 50" Exception

For Super Bowl 50 in 2016, the league broke tradition for one year. Designers argued that a standalone letter L looked visually frail on marketing assets and evoked "taking an L" (losing). Normalcy returned with Super Bowl LI.

The Olympic Games: Roman Numerals & The Olympiad Rule

Under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Charter, the Summer Olympic Games are formally named the Games of the [Roman Numeral] Olympiad. An Olympiad is a four-year window of time originating from ancient Greece in 776 BC.

Why Cancelled Games Keep Their Roman Numerals

Because an Olympiad is a continuous measurement of time (a four-year block), time cannot be cancelled. Even though World War I cancelled the 1916 Berlin Games (VI) and World War II cancelled the 1940 Tokyo/Helsinki (XII) and 1944 London (XIII) Games, the IOC officially numbered them in the historical charter!

Summer vs. Winter Olympic Numbering

Unlike the Summer Games, Winter Olympic Games are numbered strictly by the actual tournaments held, not four-year Olympiads. When the 1940 and 1944 Winter Games were cancelled, their numbers were extinguished permanently. The 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games are the XXV Olympic Winter Games (25th edition).

Athlete Jersey Suffixes: The "II", "III", and "IV" Tradition

NFL · NBA · MLB Rosters

If you turn on any NFL, NBA, or college sports broadcast in the United States, you will instantly notice Roman numerals stitched across player jersey nameplates: GRIFFIN III, WALKER IV, or HARRISON JR. How does generational suffix etiquette work, and what makes sports jerseys so unique?

Junior (Jr.) Direct Son

Given when a son receives the exact same full name (first, middle, last) as his living father. (e.g. Ken Griffey Jr., Marvin Harrison Jr.).

The Second (II) Relative / Skips Father

Historically given when a boy is named identically after his grandfather or an uncle (not his father). In modern sports, some sons also prefer II over Jr. for aesthetic jersey balance.

The Third (III) & Fourth (IV) Lineage Dynasty

Used when a direct uninterrupted bloodline of three or four generations carries the exact same full name: Grandfather (Sr.) → Father (Jr.) → Son (III) → Great-Grandson (IV).

Prominent Athletes Featuring Roman Numeral Suffixes:

Robert Griffin III III
NFL · Washington Redskins / Baltimore Ravens

2011 Heisman Trophy winner & NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Popularised three-letter suffix branding.

Kenneth Walker III III
NFL · Seattle Seahawks

Doak Walker Award winner and star NFL running back carrying third-generation family name.

Lonnie Walker IV IV
NBA · San Antonio Spurs / LA Lakers / Boston Celtics

One of the highest-profile fourth-generation Roman numeral suffixes in professional basketball.

Gary Trent Jr. / II Jr. / II
NBA · Portland / Toronto / Milwaukee

Son of NBA player Gary Trent Sr.; often registered with II/Jr. in sports record books.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Jr. / II
NFL · Arizona Cardinals

Biletnikoff Award winner & 2024 top-5 NFL draft pick, son of Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison.

John Runyan Jr. Jr. / II
NFL · Green Bay Packers / NY Giants

NFL offensive guard continuing the NFL family lineage of father Jon Runyan.

Frank Gore Jr. Jr. / II
NFL · Buffalo Bills

Carrying on the running back legacy of father Frank Gore (NFL #3 all-time rusher).

Championship Traditions

Golf Majors, The America’s Cup & Horse Racing

⛳

The U.S. Open Golf Championship

The USGA dates each U.S. Open with official Roman numerals on player pins, caddie bibs, flags, and clubhouse plaques. The 124th championship at Pinehurst No. 2 (2024) was marked CXXIV, followed by CXXV (125th) at Oakmont in 2025.

⛵

The America’s Cup (Sailing)

First contested in 1851 around the Isle of Wight, the America’s Cup is sport’s oldest active international trophy. Official regatta deeds and yacht designations employ Roman numerals, culminating in Match XXXVII (37th edition) in Barcelona.

🐎

Triple Crown & Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs celebrates historical milestone editions with Roman numerals on commemorative sterling silver mint julep cups and programs. In May 2024, the historic 150th Kentucky Derby was honoured as the CL running of the "Run for the Roses".

Frequently Asked Questions

Sports & Roman Numerals Q&A

Why does the NFL use Roman numerals for the Super Bowl?

The NFL regular season takes place in the autumn of one calendar year, but the championship game is played in January or February of the following year. Numbering each championship with Roman numerals eliminates calendar confusion and elevates the game with classical dignity.

What is the difference between Jr., II, and III on player sports jerseys?

"Junior" (Jr.) indicates an athlete named directly after his living father. "The Second" (II) traditionally honours a grandfather or relative without sharing the father's exact name. "The Third" (III) marks the third consecutive generation carrying the exact same first, middle, and last name (such as Robert Griffin III or Kenneth Walker III).

Why did WWE return to Roman numerals for WrestleMania XL?

After omitting Roman numerals on promotional event logos between WrestleMania 31 and 39, WWE deliberately restored full Roman numeral branding for WrestleMania XL (40) in 2024 to celebrate the milestone anniversary, historical prestige, and 40-year legacy of the show.

Do the Winter Olympics use Roman numerals?

Yes, but unlike the Summer Games (which count every 4-year Olympiad even if the games are cancelled), Winter Olympic Games are numbered strictly by the editions actually held. The 2026 Milano-Cortina Games are designated as the XXV Olympic Winter Games.
